November 19, 2003 Wal-Mart Appoints Porter To Head New Diversity Office Wal-Mart Stores has created a new office of diversity and named its head of human resources, Charlyn Jarrells Porter, to head its operations. The announcement comes at time when the nation's largest private employer faces separate lawsuits for sexual discrimination and non-payment for overtime. The new office is designed to handle all of Wal-Mart's diversity initiatives, including employment practices, supplier relations, and community outreach. Ms. Porter, an attorney, began her career prosecuting crimes against women and children. She later joined Wal-Mart's legal team and during that time managed a wide variety of labor and employment cases. She most recently led the people division (human resources) for all U.S. Wal-Mart stores. Wal-Mart has also named Esther Silver-Parker as vice president diversity relations. Ms. Silver-Parker currently serves as AT&T's vice president corporate affairs and corporate citizenship. "Diversity doesn't just happen," said Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott. "Success in this area requires us to approach it the same way we run our stores with focus, energy and enthusiasm. Just saying we are committed to diversity is not enough we must put in place the right systems, processes and leadership to make it happen." |
